A Circumscriptive Theory for Causal and Evidential Support

چکیده

Reasoning about causality is an interesting application area of formal nonmonotonic theories. Here we focus our attention on a certain aspect of causal reasoning, namely causaZ asymmetry. In order to provide a qualitative account of causal asymmetry, we present a justification-based approach that uses circurnscription to obtain the minimality of causes. We define the notion of causal and evidential support in terms of a justification change with respect to a circumscriptive theory and show how the definition provides desirable interactions between causal and evidential support.

Sequential Extensions of Causal and Evidential Decision Theory

Moving beyond the dualistic view in AI where agent and environment are separated incurs new challenges for decision making, as calculation of expected utility is no longer straightforward. The non-dualistic decision theory literature is split between causal decision theory and evidential decision theory. We extend these decision algorithms to the sequential setting where the agent alternates be...

Causal Models of Decision Making: Choice as Intervention

Causal considerations must be relevant to making decisions. Nevertheless, traditional decision theories like evidential expected utility theory do not have the means to distinguish causal from merely evidential relations. As a result, they fail to distinguish cases where a choice influences consequences from cases where a choice does not affect consequences even though they are correlated. Ther...

Timeless Decision Theory

Disputes between evidential decision theory and causal decision theory have continued for decades, and many theorists state dissatisfaction with both alternatives. Timeless decision theory (TDT) is an extension of causal decision networks that compactly represents uncertainty about correlated computational processes and represents the decisionmaker as such a process. This simple extension enabl...

Belief Function Approach to Evidential Reasoning in Causal Maps

The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate the use of evidential reasoning approach under Dempster-Shafer (D-S) theory of belief functions to analyze revealed causal maps. Revealed causal mapping (RCM) technique, as applied in this chapter, is a qualitative method used to develop or extend understanding of a phenomenon within a specific context. The map can be used to develop models, either ...

A Theory of Diagnosis for Incomplete Causal Models

One of the problems of the recent approaches to problem solving based on deep knowledge is the lack of a formal treatment of incomplete knowledge. However, dealing with incomplete models is fundamental to many realworld domains. In this paper we propose a formal theory of causal diagnostic reasoning, dealing with different forms of incompleteness both in the general causal knowledge (missing or...
